Giant Pandas Bamboo Diet - Jaap Wensvoort, Nutritionist Toronto Zoo

Giant Pandas are very picky eaters and this behaviour varies a lot, there is no useful average figure available. In the wild they switch bamboo species and feed in different areas at different times in the same bamboo growth. The amount of rejected bamboo can be at 100% but it can also be less than 50%.
We like the pandas to ingest 10-15 kg per animal per day and therefore offer them at least 50 kg per day. Therefore we assume an intake of minimal 20 % and maximal 30%. We offer different species and check which they like best and for next delivery order more of the (at the time) most preferred bamboo. Unfortunately, the next day all can change. We follow their bamboo intake and excrement output on a daily basis and adjust accordingly.
