Hot out of the oven: Buddy's -- Detroit’s original square pizza now with kale, is fit to be square

DETROIT -- It’s time to make eating more pizza your 2015 resolution and at Buddy’s Pizza, fans can eat their favorite pie guilt-free.

Whether you are watching your waistline or have a dietary restriction, keeping health and fitness goals is easy at Buddy’s.

Delicious and healthful choices start right with a slice of Detroit’s original square pizza. Gluten-free and vegan choices offer diners with dietary restrictions a way to enjoy their favorite square pie, while veggie toppings, low fat  or dairy-free cheese, multi-grain and thin crust options make building a nutritious pizza a piece of cake.

“This time of year, we’re all trying to watch what we eat and be more health conscious, and pizza can be a healthy choice year-round,” said Wes Pikula, Buddy’s Pizza, vice president of operations. “We’ve worked hard to reduce sodium levels, prepare our dough without sugar or oil, and offer our patrons gluten-free, vegan and a variety of healthful options.”

Pikula has worked consistently with nutritionists to ensure Buddy’s Pizza’s menu items not only taste great, but also offer high levels of nutritional value. And recently, Buddy’s added superfood kale to the menu.

“Kale has really increased in popularity over the last year, and it lends itself well to topping pizzas,” said Pikula.  “Even those customers who have never tasted kale before, seem to enjoy it on our Kale Lover’s pie.”

About Buddy's

Established in 1936 on the corner of Conant and Six Mile Roads as a neighborhood tavern, it was not until 1946 that Buddy's first introduced our famous square pizza — the first of its kind — to Detroit. It was love at first bite.

More than 69 years, and numerous awards later, Buddy's continues to serve Detroit's original square pizza, made from scratch soups, and our celebrated Antipasto salad. Over time we have added a variety items to our menu including gluten-free pizza, multi-grain crust, pastas, burgers, sandwiches and more - each prepared just as they would have been in 1946 — with the freshest ingredients and an acute attention to detail.

One of the secrets to Buddy's success has always been our dedicated, hardworking staff. Many of whom started off at Buddy's original location now take pride in keeping Buddy's traditions alive at the nine metro Detroit locations.

Buddy's is proud to give back to the community through our participation in a number of charitable causes as well as our "Got Pizza, Give Dough," "Sometimes You Need Some Buddy's," "Celebrity Signature Pizza", "Dining With The Stars," "Motor City Pizza Collection", "Great Lakes Pizza Collection" and "Buddy Bone" campaigns.
